Hi there)
We're two students from Moscow, English majors, in the middle of linguistic research at our university. We need several native speakers of English to fill in either of two short tests (or both of em :-). Your help would be invaluable. We can't do it ourselves, 'cause only native speakers possess the needed sense of the 'mother' language.

test 1
test 2

Please, could you assess the propriety of the sentences given in the tests?

P.S. Please feel encouraged to turn to us if you need any help with Russian in return :-)

thesis statement help
Hey there. I was just wondering if someone could correct any grammar mistakes in this, for I'm sure they exist:

John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, clearly shows an utter disregard for females and blatantly accentuates their characters flaws and strips them of all integrity and honor; for example, stereotyping them as common whores, stating, directly or indirectly, that they are always the source of trouble, saying that women are the property of and therefore need men, implying that all women should be suspected of taking part in infidelity, and having an overall bias toward the male gender, thus depicting all women to be disloyal, deceitful, and generally dreadful beings.

Here is what I'm doing, if you're interested. Please do advise me of any changes that I, in your opinion, should make in order to have a better thesis statement. I am utterly at a loss for any intelligent thoughts, and this baby is due tomorrow, ha! etcCollapse )

I'm having trouble approaching the following problem:

"The wind-chill index is modeled by the function

W = 13.12 + 0.6215T - 11.37(v^0.16) + 0.3965T(v^0.16)

where T is the temperature (degrees C) and v is the wind speed (km/h). When T=-15 degrees C and v=30 km/h, by how much would you expect the apparent temperature to drop if the actual temperature decreases by 1 degree C? What if the wind speed increases by 1 km/h?"

My problem is that I don't even see the use of partial derivatives in the solution. Would the changes simply be W(-16, 30) minus W(-15, 30) and W(-15, 31) minus W(-15, 30)? --where W(a, b) denotes the function W evaluated at T=a and v=b.

problem: methanol (wood alcohol), a commercial solvent once used as an automotive antifreeze, is very toxic and may cause death if a person swallows as little as 30mL. The extreme toxicity is due not to the methanol itself but to its metabolic product, formaldehyde. Methanol is rapidly oxidized to formaldehyde by the action of the liver enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Part of the medical treatment for methanol poisoning is to give the patient ethanol, either by mouth or intravenously, in amounts that would cause intoxication in a normal individual. Explain why this treatment is effective.

thanks!

Grammar/Writing-expert wants to help/edit/proofread Your paper, $2
My Name is Liz, and I just graduated from the New School For Social Research, a University in Greenwich Village, NYC. I was a fiction writing concentrator. I am offering up my knowledge, talent and skill for literature and english to You, the High school or College student. I recently found out that I scored in the 98% percentile on the Vocabulary portion of the Wexler IQ test. (better than 98% of all those who were administered the Wexler IQ test)

I am impeccable when it comes to proofreading and grammar. The 'good' grammar comes from my knowledge of Latin, my Catholic school teacher mother, writing experience, and talent. ;--)

So email me, nomen_mihi_est at yahoo. I would love to proofread and help you with Your term paper, essay, etc under 15 pages, for any subject. If its a college entrance essay, I will also give you questions and suggestions, (because I am also a literature writer). I can help you. I charge $2 to help with a 2 page double spaced paper. So if it is a longer assignment, we can work something out. :--)

Hey.. it's me again...
Hi. Thanks to all who replied to my previous post.. but iSTILLstupidneedhelp! Well, I was supposed to give my teacher a thesis and outline for my literary interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown. I e-mailed it to her...

thesis + outline... very high school; NOT college levelCollapse )

... and she replied that I have to analyze the author's craft, and that my thesis had nothing to do with the author's craft. She also said that the piece is an allegory, and I should look up the definition and see how it fits the story. Well... I know what an allegory is because I did a project on the morality play "Everyman," which is also an allegory, but I think that play is much easier than this story because of the... umm... obviousness(?) of the symbols and stuff. ... We were talking more about the assignment today in class, and she only wants an interpretation of one element of the story to write a short paper on. She also said that people have written dissertations about Young Goodman Brown becasue there are SO MANY elements to be focused on... SHEESH! She suggested to write on an element that had the most impact as I read.

Well... there were a few things that made a huge impact on me. There's the little speech that the dark satanic figure gave about how the people of the congregation are looked upon as holy, but in reality are followers of the Devil and sin. Then there's the paragraph about the "bloody baptism into sin," in which Goodman Brown gave into. ... or should I take the easier way out and write about the next morning when Goodman Brown starts acting shady... where I'm left to assume that it was all a dream, but a rude awakening.. or something?

Any suggestions?! I'm soo uncertain at the moment... AHH!!!

anyone wanna help?
I know.. this is very bad and lazy of me, but I was wondering... did anybody read the short story Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne? I'm reading it right now and I need to write a short literary analysis about it. Does anyone have any suggestions for something simple to wrote about? Maybe a character analysis or symbolism or what have you? What I need for tomorrow is a thesis statement.. and then I'll work from there. If anyone can help it, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

physics confusion
the following are four problems that have been giving me trouble. i often don't know where to start with these physics problems due to the fact that i can't find the correct formula(s) to use. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance!

1) a small cube slides down a frictionless incline. it then strikes elastically another cube at the bottom that is only 1/4 of its mass. if the incline is 30m high and the table is 100cm off the floor, where does each cube land?

2) a shop sign weighing 215N is supported by a uniform 135N beam.
.........
a)find the tension of the cable and the reaction forces exerted at the hinge.
b) if someone were to cut the cable, what angular acceleration will the beam experience at the instant the cable is cut?

3) a baseball just clears a 3m wall which is 120m from home plate. if the ball leaves the bat at 45 degrees and 1.2m above the ground, what must its initial velocity be? assume no air resistance.

4) a 900kg object strikes a huge spring at a speed of 20m/s, compressing it 5m.
........
a) what is the spring constant?
b) how long is the object in contact with the spring before it bounces off in the opposite direction?

Java Help
Is there a way i can intercept key presses? For example, is there a way that, no matter what has focus, i can (for example) print which key has been pressed to the default output stream.

I've done it for a frame, but once the frame no longer has focus, the keylistener no longer works. Thanks
